Visual media has an undeniable power over perception. Throughout American history, the media has worked tirelessly to tarnish the image of black people by creating false narratives riddled with negativity cultivating a world that is conditioned to see us as less-than. These inaccurate depictions and portrayals have created society in which others do not see black people for the beauty, power, strength and value that we truly hold. Rather they see us in the light, or lack thereof that the media has shown us in. Without intention to deny or diminish the importance and the mistreatment of black women and girls, my artistic focus and effort to combat this gravitated to the young black man. History shows a very specific demonization of black men in America with no end in sight. My work is showcasing them through an unconditioned eye. Through my lens, I set out to create photographs that show the truth and beauty of young black men. These images are my way of beginning to dismantle these stereotypes.
